Hokkaido, Home of 7 Cute Animals

Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan is home of 7 incredibly adorable animal species that can’t be found on any other part of the country. These extremely cute animals will instantly make you fall in love with them. Although some of them are part of other more widely spread species, others are unique and specific to the region. What is a better way to start a new year than learning about some really special cute animals of Hokkaido.

Ezo Momonga

This cuties is a special type of flying squirrel. With its huge black eyes and small legs, it has become a local mascot. You can see it on railway tickets.


It is type of titmouse that is specific to Hokkaido. As opposed to the titmice living in the rest of Japan, this has no brown eyebrows. Its face is completely white.


Red fox

The red fox living on Hokkaido is a subspecies of the well-known red fox.

Red squirrel

Red squirrels do live all over the world but Hokkaido has got its own special subspecies of red squirrel, too.

Ezo Naki Usagi

Ezo naki usagi, or the crying rabbit is a local subspecies of the northern pike. It lives in the northern part of Japan and North Asia. It is said to have given the idea of Pikachu, the favorite pokemon.



Iizuna or the weasel is a subspecies that prefers the climate of the northern part of Hokkaido, Siberia and northern Scandinavia. Unlike other weasels, the fur of the iizuna turns white for the winter. This is a great way of camouflaging itself.
